RISE E-News Spring 2016
Hello Certified Solar Roofing Professionals and RISE supporters!
We hope you enjoyed a successful winter. It has been a busy season for RISE. RISE board members and staff attended
several roofing and solar industry events to promote the CSRP program. Further, the RISE board is developing new initiatives
aimed at advancing the adoption of rooftop solar in the roofing and solar industries. Following are a few significant rooftop solar industry happenings.
2016 Intersolar North America
From July 12-14, RISE will exhibit at the most-attended solar event and premier networking platform for the North
American solar industry. Intersolar North America takes place annually in San Francisco and focuses on the areas of PV,
PV production technologies, energy storage and solar thermal technologies. You can attend the exhibition for free if
you register by May 6. To register,
Featured CSRP Rooftop Solar Project
Sal DePrisco, CSRP, of Sensible Technical Solutions, Guilford, ME, brought us a beautiful project his company completed
for the General Services Administration (GSA) offices located in Jamaica, N.Y. The project was located in the heart of
Queens, an urban location with no room for large trucks, lifts or cranes and towered 160 feet above street level.
Material handling was the biggest challenge. Workers had to manually carry all roofing and PV materials up several
flights of stairs to a freight elevator and then up to the roof. The project included installing 50,000 square feet of
an 80-mil TPO membrane with no significant roof penetrations, plus 79.8kW of a fully adhered flexible thin-film PV
system (see photo). A temporary guardrail system was used for the project's fall protection during construction. The
only downside of the project: talon marks left by territorial falcons on the TPO roof membrane!
If you have a project you are proud of and would like to be featured in our newsletter or on the RISE website, please send
photos and a short project description to RISE staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Al Gore's TED Talk addresses solar industry
In February 2016, Al Gore presented a TED talk titled, "The Case for Optimism on Climate Change." In his powerful
address, Gore asked three key questions about the manmade forces threatening our planet and discussed strategies and
solutions designed to combat them, including PV!

Selling Rooftop Solar Webinar May 5th
The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is offering a webinar about selling rooftop solar May 5. Michael
Bishop of OnGrid (www.ongrid.net) will present a quick guide about selling rooftop
solar. The webinar is designed to address questions such as: "Is roofing experience and expertise a significant
competitive advantage in the rooftop PV market?" and "How do I present to a customer the value proposition of solar
investment?" Registration is free to NRCA members. Nonmembers also can
participate for a fee. Visit www.nrca.net/webinar in early April to register.
RISE to present at NABCEP conference
RISE staff will participate in two panel presentations during the annual NABCEP Continuing Education conference April
4—6 in San Diego. "Roofing Topics for Solar Professionals" will cover basic design and installation best
practices and common mistakes when installing rooftop solar PV systems, and "Managing Worker Safety" will present best
practices for designing and implementing a company safety program, also known as an Injury Illness and Prevention Plan
